The cheapest US cities range from as low as $30 per day to over $200 with three different categories of expensive cities: luxury rentals (over $300), business travel ($150-$225) and budget travel ($80-$150).

The holidays are here, which means family vacations, road trips, get-togethers, and other enjoyable travel activities.

It’s also no surprise that certain things are just going to be more costly this year, particularly automobile rentals. FinanceBuzz compiled information on the 100 most popular holiday towns and attractions around the country to compile a list of the most and least costly locations to hire a vehicle over the holiday season.

Let’s start with the bad news: the most costly cities for automobile rentals are typically in states with milder weather. In fact, Hawaii is home to the top three most costly cities for auto rentals this holiday season!

– Kona, Hawaii – A daily automobile rental in Kona costs $195, while a ten-day rental costs $1,948! – Lihue, Hawaii – Lihue is in second position, with a daily vehicle rental charge of $158.38 for a total of $1,583. – Kahului, Hawaii – In third place is Kahului, which charges $156.55 per day for a total of $1,565 for 10 days. – Florida’s Fort Myers – Fort Myers, in fourth position, has a daily automobile rental charge of roughly $146, for a total of $1,466 for ten days. – Hawaii’s Honolulu – Honolulu, another Hawaiian city, is in fifth position, with a daily charge of $142 and a ten-day rental of $1,420. – Colorado, Denver – Denver is in sixth position, costing $114.67 each day for a total of $1,146 over 10 days. – Utah’s Salt Lake City – Car rentals in Salt Lake City are the sixth most costly in the nation, at $114 per day for a total of $1,141 for ten days. – Illinois, Chicago – Chicago is in eighth position, with a daily fee of little under $109 and a ten-day rate of $1,089. – Minnesota, Minneapolis – The daily rental charge in Minnesota is $107, for a total of $1,070 over ten days. – Baltimore, Maryland – Baltimore is ranked tenth, with a daily rental fee of $105.90 and a total of $1,059.

 

The Cities with the Cheapest Car Rentals

In the winter, the least priced cities for automobile rentals are often less tourist-heavy areas. Anchorage is the most affordable city in the US to hire a vehicle, but two locations in Washington state also make the list.

– Anchorage, Alaska – With a daily rate of just under $49 for a total ten-day rental charge of $484.55, Anchorage is the cheapest city in the US for vehicle rentals. – Cincinnati, Ohio – In second place is Cincinnati, where tourists may rent a vehicle for $51.13 per day or $511 for ten days. – Spokane, Washington – With a daily fee of just under $55 and a total ten-day cost of $544.56, Spokane comes in third. – Tulsa, Oklahoma – With a daily rate of $55.62 and a ten-day cost of $556, Tulsa is the fourth cheapest city for renting a vehicle. – Louisville, Kentucky – Louisville is in fifth position, with a daily vehicle rental charge of $58 and a ten-day rate of $582. – Dallas, Texas – With a rental rate of just under $59 and a total cost of $588, Dallas is in sixth position. – Norfolk, Virginia – The daily automobile rental fee in Norfolk is $60.27, for a total of slightly under $603. – Fort Worth, Texas – Fort Worth is ranked eighth, with vehicle rental costs at $65 per day and a total of $651 for ten days. – Oakland, California – With a daily rate of $67.69 and a ten-day total cost of $676.87, Oakland is ranked ninth. – Seattle, Washington – With a daily fee of slightly over $68 and a total ten-day cost of $681.51, Seattle is the ninth cheapest city for renting a vehicle.
